I recently found out I have genital herpes

I had a gyn appointment back in August and didn't find out until this past week that they have been trying to contact me because my blood work should I am positive for HSV 2. Apparently they had the wrong number and I didn't think to contact them because they had said if there was anything wrong they would call me so I assumed everything came out ok.

I have had sexual intercourse with a man I've know for four years now (on and off) "A friend with benefits".
For the most part it has been with protection but we have at times not used a condom (in the beginning of sexual intercourse). Besides him, there was one more man (which I've known since grade school and reconnected with back in may).  We started have sexual intercourse (oral as well) in July (he is currenlty in Iraq).  We did not use a condom throughout the 3 weeks we were together.  He will be coming back in January 2011 and we have since gotten a lot closer.  So much so that our feeling for each other have grown.  I am terrified of telling him that I may have given him this virus although it may have been him that gave it to me.

How do I tell him?  I'm so scared of losing him and what we have or may be developing.

No, you are not 100% positive for HSV II; however, 4.1 is somewhat high and is less likely to be a false positive.  I strongly suggest you confirm with a Biokit or Western Blot.  If you have any symptoms, have them swabbed within 24-48 hours.

Condoms only reduce transmission risk 30%; therefore, in my opinion, it is imperative that you tell your partner.  I don't know him so I don't know if phone or in person would be better, but it is a good idea for him to be tested upon return.

Hi Grace,

thank you for all your help and response.  I called back and what they said was that the confirmation came back positive for hsv2 and that the results read: igg 4.1.

I have not told my friend of four years yet.  I've been trying to meet him for the past few days but he's been unreachable.  I'm hoping to talk to him this weekend.

I have a question, about the other man, he's in Iraq and will be coming down in Janurary.  This was supposed to be a great few weeks together and now I fear everything is just a mess.
We talk just about everyday, and since finding out I feel horrible when we speak as if I'm keeping something from him (which I am).  Should I tell him now (over the phone) the next time we speak.  That way he can schedule a doctor's appointment upon his return or should I wait until he arrives to speak to him.

I don't know what to do.

another thing, If I use protection everytime I have sex and don't have sex if and when outbreaks occur (I had maybe one but it looked like a pimple) can I just not say anything to my future sex partner?

Also, because the result came back igg 4.1 (with confirmation reading positive) - does it mean I am 100% positive with hsv2?

I am someone that always looks on the positive side of things pratice yoga, take my multi-vitamins, and eat (for the most part)healthy.
My world has been turned upside down in a matter of min (for almost two weeks now).

Sometimes I wish I didn't see that letter in the mail or choose to get my blood drawn that day.

they should be giving you the actual numeric results when you ask for them. your HIPAA rights are access to all test results.

have you talked to your partner yet about this? He'll need tested to see what his status is. Just be open and honest with him - you had no idea you had it , have no idea how long you've had it and at this point are just learning more about it and that he too needs to cover his bases too since he's been your partner periodically for so long.

the person I spoke to that the results were high enough for the results to be positive.

Hi Grace,

thank you for responding.  I called the clinic but they weren't able to tell me my results and suggested I give them a call back tomorrow since they were busy and didn't have the results at reach.  All the person could say was that I was positive for HSV 1 and 2.

just call the clinic when you get a chance and ask them to read your herpes blood test results to you and write them down to post here. I can better help you make sure you were properly tested and see if you need additional testing or not once I see those. All I need posted are the numeric results - e.g. hsv1 igg 8.3 and hsv2 igg 2.6 or whatever they are.

I'm not sure but I will find out.  They didn't tell me the score only that I tested positive for both HSV2.

Did u have an IGG or IGM antibody test?? this is important bc IGM tests are no good and a lot of docs do not keep up with up to date tests.  What are your testing values. Your tests should have a "score" like HSV 2 IGG postive- 2.4   or something like that..Many times a low positive value can mean its false positive! give us more details.
