IgM False Positive?

IgM False Positive?

I have recently started dating a new guy after having been married and in a monogamous relationship. I asked my doctor for the STD panel and they did not do herpes. I asked for the herpes test and received the following results:

          IgM  1.11 (reference value .91)
HSV I IgG    .11  (.90)
HSV II IgG   .14   (.90)

My doctor circled the IgM value on my test results and told me I had a current or recent infection of HSV I or II, but did not know which because it was too early to tell.  He could not tell me when I had been infected (one month versus ten) and told me to re-test in six weeks and to not have sex.

How reliable is the IgM test? Is there anything else I can do to confirm or discount this result without having to wait six weeks?  I don't have any symptoms at all and never have.

I understand there is another, more accurate test.  How does one request that test? Is it expensive? Will it be able to clear up this IgM number?

Thanks so much!!

IgM is completely unreliable.  Disregard that result.  IgG is the reliable test & it appears that you are negative for both HSV I & HSV II.

Has your new partner been tested?

certainly make sure your new partner has covered all their bases too. knowing your status is only half of the picture for the 2 of you!

a + igm is meaningless as still_worried already pointed out.  http://www.medhelp.org/posts/STDs/Confusiion-over-other-IgM-Herpes-posts/show/248394  is a terrific prior post by HHH that discusses the flaws of the test and why it shouldn't  be ordered on adults for the purpose of diagnosing genital herpes.
