IgM False negative

by misternagi, Oct 07, 2009 06:30AM
Hello,
I have been tested negative on swab test, negative igg type 1 & 2 and negative igm type 1 & 2 (<0.8).
The tests were made one month after supposed date of infection. The swab test 2 days after appearing of blisters.
However my dermatologist tells me I have genital herpes (2 vesicles on penis, reappearing at the same spot, itching, etc.). The doctor who gave me the results tells me that if I had herpes, the igm would be positive and that it must be hair follicular infection (I'm not sure of the exact term). I'm puzzled. I was so sure I got herpes. Both told me to wait 2 months and do the igg again. But in the mean time, I'd like to know if there are statistics on false negative igm.
Thank you

The igm herpes test is a flawed test and we never recommend having it done.

Lesion cultures are falsely negative about 70% of the time.

So what do you do now? Well at this point, repeat your igg blood test 4 months after the questionable encounter. Should you get a recurrence of genital lesions before then. be seen that day or the next for a pcr swab ( more accurate than a viral culture ).

I've read many things about the reliability of igm testing. However most of these posts are 2 to 3 years old. I had what looks like a type specific igm. So it seems it is available now. How reliable are these new tests?
I've read also that igm problem is mainly false positive. But what about false negative?
Maybe a little update on the state of the art in herpes testing would clarify the situation.
Thanks

thank you Grace. our posts crossed each other. for sure i'll do this if it is available in china which i doubt. but if you have information about igm, i'll take it as i think that the problems are for people infected with hsv 1 earlier.

The type specific igm's are still very flawed. They still aren't worth getting.  They have a higher false positive rate than a false negative rate but it's still an issue.
