About a year ago I had a partner who was unfaithful to me with a woman who happened to be positive for herpes. As soon as I found out about the infidelity I was tested for both antibodies and came back negative. Out of pure stupidity I exposed myself to my old partner in the beginning of this year (although a condom
was used) and got tested again for both IgM and IgG antibodies. Although the man says he has been tested and has come back negative numerous times, I still felt the need to get tested again. I haven't had sex
in almost 4 months and was recently tested - the "short term" IgM test came back positive whereas the long term IgG test came back negative. I am completely freaked out about these results and I was hoping somebody could shed some light on how to this is possible for 1 test to come back positive (when I havent been exposed to anyone sexually in almost 4 months) and 1 to be negative.... please tell me its a false positive
An IgM blood test is worthless for diagnosing herpes - disregard it. It can pick up many different viruses, including the chicken pox and mono antibodies.
