IgM anxiety, etc --what are my chances? please help

by montanablues, Jul 18, 2008 09:21PM
I am a woman and had unprotected sex three weeks ago, and also made out with a second guy. The person I had sex with said he did not have any STDs, but who knows. Five days later, I went and got an STD screening. My Herpes IgGs were negative, so I did not have preexisting HSV 1 or 2. But the Herpes IgM was positive. Now I'm terrified.

After reading this forum, I see that the IgM test is unreliable, so I regret getting it. Meanwhile my course of action is to not have any sex for 3 months until I can get the IgG tests.

Does anyone know how often the false positives happen for the IgM test? How likely is that to be the case and how likely is it that I DID contract HSV 1 or 2?

Neither person I was with had any visible sores, oral or genital, that I noticed. I also have not noticed any on myself in the past 3 weeks, but I know that most people never have symptoms anyway so that's small comfort.

Does it make any difference that the sex only lasted a couple of minutes?

Should I abstain from kissing too? Wouldn't it be possible for me to transmit HSV-1 now? assuming I have it, then I must have gotten it from someone who was asymptomatic so I could still pass it on if I was asymptomatic?

Also, what if I had a cervical outbreak? Is there any way to tell? What kind of discharge should I be looking for?

I'd appreciate any advice. I've been making myself crazy with worry. Thank you very much!

I am sure you are fine!!! Stop reading the internet. IGM = Waste of Money. You are not likely to contract herpes from what you said so unless you have any physical symptoms which you would of had by now, you are fine!!!!!!
