Igg negative, Igm slightly positive...please help analyze

by concerned81999, Sep 03, 2009 11:27PM
Ok guys.  I'm freaking out.  On a whim, I decided to do a comprehensive STD screening.  I have no symptoms of anything; decided to do it only to be safe.

I called the screening center to get my results today and the original person I spoke with said that I had Herpes.  She said I was positive for my 'nonspecific' test but that my 'type specific' test was inconclusive.  My last sexual contact was about a week ago (started about 6 weeks ago with the same girl ever since) and the counselor over the phone said I would have to wait 90 days, do the test again, then see which type (1 or 2) I had.  I again asked if she was positive that I indeed had some kind of herpes; she said yes, we just don't know what kind yet.

I called back again and spoke with another counselor, who proceeded to tell me I did not have Herpes.  I brought up the conversation I had with the prior counselor.  The second counselor then told me that my Igg tests were negative and that my Igm test was 1.20.  She explained to me that anything above 1.09 on the Igm is positive, but that 1.20 is just barely elevated.  She urged that it was VERY LIKELY that this was a false positive.  She reassured me that other viruses produce Igm antibodies.  And that in conjunction with the fact that I nor my partner have had any symptoms leads her to believe my case was just another in a long line of Igm false positives.  She stressed that the first counselor I spoke with was new to the company, didn't know about the nuances of the Igm test, and was generally incompetent.

I'm confused, relieved, freaking out, etc.  It sounds like I have to get tested again in 90 days to be safe, but it seems unlikely that I actually do have Herpes?  What do you all say?  I've done a lot of research since and I keep reading that the Igm is a worthless test, it's unreliable, etc.  Any help would be appreciated, especially an analysis of my 1.20 readout.

Thank you in advance.

I've done a lot of reading on this site and others and it seems that results less than 3.5 can be false positives.

It seems the good doctor on this site recommends doing a second confirmatory test, with the more affordable one being the BiokitUSA test.  My additional question is do I similarly have to wait 12 weeks or so before taking the BiokitUSA test, or can I take that test right away?  If I have to wait, are there any alternative confirmatory tests that can be taken right away?

To be clear again, started sexual intercourse with a girl 6 weeks ago, continuously till about a week ago.  Thanks again.

Just giving this a friendly bump for you, grace.  I apologize, just didn't want it to get buried under the other threads.

I am facing the same situation as you with higher IGM of 2.7 and the doctor told me to relax but i still have to do another test in 90days.

It is very confusing situation, I saw more than 4 doctors as for now and i think they are more lost than I am.
