Ingrown hair irritation vs. herpes?

I noticed an ingrown hair on my genitals the other day - I get them from time to time, as I get the hair waxed regularly. This time, however, I decided to severely pick at the blemish - and I think I might have scratched off several layers of skin. Now it has developed into a raw, open irritation. There is only one, with several little white heads close to it. This completely freaked me out, as it is taking it's time healing. But I also think this is due to it's position, and gets constantly rubbed as I walk.
Could this be herpes? It is the only time I have ever seen this happen...Or am I just stupid for having picked it that badly?

It could be many things. the best thing to do is follow up with your provider on monday for a proper exam and diagnosis.
