Interpret IgG test resuts for Herpes Simplex 1

Interpret IgG test resuts for Herpes Simplex 1

Greetings!

I just had lab work for both HSV1 and HSV2 and have a simple question on each.

Results as follows:

Herpes Simplex Virus Type I  IgG Test   Value:   3.26     Range: 0.00-0.90   Positive
Herpes Simplex Virus Type II IgG Test   Value: <0.91    Range: 0.00-0.90         Negative

Here are my questions...

HSV1 - As I tested way above the range, I'm clear on why this is a Positive result.  But I read somewhere that it's possible to determine how long one has been infected based on how high or low their positive result is.  Can anyone advise??  Example-- I read if you have a result of 5.0, you've prob been infected for a long time.  I'm unable to make sense of that or to know where I would fall.

HSV2 - My result is a hair outside of the max range, but it's listed as Negative.   Is it likely that I should get retested since my result is so close to the top range??   With my score of .91 vs a max range of .90, this seems like a cause for retesting... unless I'm totally misunderstanding how this works?

What a great surprise to find a board like this.
THANKS TO ALL!!

no you can not determine how long you've been infected based on the numeric result of your blood test.

as for repeating your hsv2 test, how long has it been since you last had sex prior to getting tested?  did you have symptoms or was this just a routine screening for you?

While I won't interpret your results I will say this about what you're asking. You will never know how long ago you were infected.  The numbers don't mean more or less antibody is in the system at all.

A negative is a negative.  Your test looks like mine in the value range.  This was done I am sure as more and more people started having fears of being positive because they would get a 0.03 or a 0.82 etc and think those values are showing they have been "exposed".  But that is just my guess and not a fact I know.  Also the result was a LESS THEN .91 so it wasn't an equal to or less then .91.

Your responses are very helpful.   No symptoms... but wanted to get tested as I'd never had a herpes test before and (frankly) I have enough sex with various partners over the yrs that I figured the odds were against me.  Relieved to find otherwise.

As for test results... a big thank you for pointing out (what only now feels obvious to me) re " Also the result was a LESS THEN .91 so it wasn't an equal to or less then .91."

Also thankful you on advising that test results don't reveal how long you've been infected.  Several people were inferring otherwise on another board so I'm glad I asked here.  They appear misinformed as well...lol.
