Is it herpes?

by answerquestions, Jul 07, 2008 08:52PM
I recently went to the doctor due to unexplained itching in my vaginal area that has been happening for year. The itching frequently happens at night and nothing during the day. There has been two small red bumps on the inner lips that do not look like blisters and do not seemed to be filled with fluid, they are skin colored the are not hard and they are not soft kind of in the middle and about the size of a tip of a q-tip. They are not painful, it does not hurt to pee, there is no unusual discharge or smell. They only side effect is itching and it happens not just on those two bumps but both sides of my inner lips towards the bottom. I have never had open sores and they have never popped and these bumps have never disappeard for the past several years. I have had several sex partners but all protected sex. When I went to the doctor she took a look and said herpes without testing me and put me on valtrex and said if it goes away its herpes. I was recently diagnosed with HPV but then three months later the HPV test came back not detected I still had a coloscopy and that came back fine. Is this actually genital herpes?

If the bumps have been there for several years they are not herpes. It sounds like the provider you saw was just guessing :(  go for another opinion somewhere.

Research Scabies. They tend to come out at night and produce puritus (itching) and no itching during the day! Keep us advised what they find but nothing you have sad suggests herpes!!

So, I was tested and the tests came back negative (hooray!!) They did tell me to continue to take the valtrex to see if the symptoms go away, should I do this? Recently, with all the indecisiveness by medical physicians I feel I have very little trust in them. Between this and a different doctor lying to me telling me I still have HPV when in fact the test read not detected to get me to have a coloscopy it has become very frustrating. However, the doctor did indicate that they did not think it was scabies, could there be any other explanation for this itching??

At this point, treat for Scabies and throw your herpes meds away!! Your doctor is obviously an idiot... Oh yeah, change Doctors to...

Actually no reason to suspect scabies either. If you had had scabies this long it would've been woefully obvious to even an unexperienced practioner.

Many things can cause chronic itch.  If you aren't getting answers and treatment that works from your current practioner, perhaps a consult with a dermatologist is your next step. Some even have a speciality in genital disease if you can find one near you. Don't hesitate to ask your insurance for a recommendation if your regular doctor isn't able to recommend one.
