Is there any reason to re-test

I got back my blood test results that said I was negative for HSV 1 and positive for HSV 2. The IGG test result was 3.78. I understand over 3.50 it is considered a true positive .I realize this is over but is .28 over considered to be significant or can there still be some possibility of a false positive.?

I never have had any blisters or pain when urinating. I have had redness on my scrotum and thighs where they rub together. My doctor has twice examine this and concluded it to be like a tropical fungus like jock itch. I also understand now by reading it can be a symptom of herpes. The test was taken just three days after sexual intercourse and don't know if this has any bearing. I have had this redness jock itch appearing symptom for many years ( 15+ ) so if this was to be a symptom of herpes then if the test is accurate then I could have been positive for a very long time up to 40 years without knowing. I also have had flu like symptoms that can be herpes related or maybe not. How do you know its herpes or you have a flu. ? My wife has no symptoms and is going to be tested in next couple of days.

I saw on another forum where someone had a result of 3.52 thus being positive.

That person then went on to have three western blot tests where they showed him to be negative. Then the person was still left wondering what tests to go by. Which is considered more accurate. ?

Getting back to my original question with having a result of 3.78 being over 3.50 could there still be a chance of a false negative and should I get re-tested and if so what type of test should I get. My feeling is that if my wife turns out to be positive then likely I am but if she turns out to be negative then I would be left thinking. Is it somewhat automatic if one partner is positive then after continuous sexual contact  your partner would be also, or could one partner not be positive even after years of regular sexual contact. ?

the herpes igm test is a greatly flawed test and current CDC recommendations are that it not be drawn on adults for the purpose of diagnosing herpes infections. A + igm won't mean for sure it was a recent infection. your provider should read the 2010 CDC herpes guidelines to better update their herpes testing knowledge in general! they are risking malpractice by not doing so!

Yes the herpes WB is an older test, it's been available for over 20 years now. It's still considered the gold standard of herpes confirmatory infection testing.  The CDC recommends it for confirming status.

your igg is in the false positive range yet since it's under 5, you've never had symptoms and you aren't going t be able to confirm infection easily with a lesion culture. Follow up with the recommendations I previously made on testing and go from there.

I lost my password and forgot what email address I used to sign up so had to re-register with this nick CP55. I saw my doctor today with the results. He said that the IGG test indicated a past inflection. I have never had any sores, blisters, lesions or has my wife. The doctor said that the redness that I have that is on my scrotum and my thighs is not herpes related as far as he was concerned because my thighs have nothing to do with the genitals.

He did examine me closely with a little flashlight and saw no evidence of visible herpes although you don't have to have any to be inflected I understand. He wants myself and my wife to be tested with a IGM test to see if any inflection shows up with that test that would indicate something recent.

He said if we both came back being negative with that test then he says there is no problem for us to have sex even with that IGG positive test of 3.78. If one of us does come back positive from the IGM test then he wants to discuss it.

At this point he did not prescribe any medication. He doesn't seem to put much emphasis on a past inflection. Does this make sense to you. ?

I guess I find this all confusing. He says the western bloc is an older test. If you never had a breakout with blisters or sores then how do you know when your having a breakout. ? And if you never had a breakout but have a 3.78 IGG result then what are you suppose to make of it. ? What should I be doing. ?

it's still a decent incidence of false positives with that result. since we can't rule out a recent infection either, worth the confirmatory testing.

why do you have to wait?  about half of folks test accurately at the 3 week mark on readily available igg herpes tests. For the herpes WB to be most accurate, you need to wait the full 4 months.

Thank you for reply Grace but why 4 months to re-tested. ? I thought you can be tested about 3 weeks after sexual contact. ?

Can there still be a fake positive with 3.78 result or with that result it is extremely unlikely ?

you will need to confirm your status with additional testing. since there was a recent encounter involved, you need to wait 4 months post encounter for a herpes WB to confirm your status.
