Just Diagnosed

I have already known that I have had Herpes 1 since I have had about 2-3 cold sores in my life. However I got tested last week and the doctor stated that I tested positive for  Herpes 1 and 2. I have never had any signs of infection or any outbreaks. The doctor stated that it was an Igg test and for both I tested a 5. The doctor says that it seems like I have had it for a while. I am going back to get tested again and also to have my husband tested. He has never had any signs of an outbreak. My question is this, I have regular Pap smears and I always get tested once a year and this has never showed up. I have been with my husband for 5 years and we have a three year old. Wouldn't I have been tested for this during pregnancy? I am now wondering how I got this and if it is possible I couls have had it for a while (before our relationship) despite all of these circumstances.
Also on a side note, I had Epstein Barr (Mono) virus this past November. Could this have caused a positive HSV 2 result? Is it worth it to take Lysine everyday or go on suppresive therapy when I have never had an outbreak? Is it possible that I may never have one, since they say that the first outbreak usually occurs within 2-6 weeks of being infected and is usually the worse? I am getting freaked out becuase when I see those pictures of people with Herpes and they have like 25 sores I am wondering why they have that many if they are taking medicine, and if that could happen to me.

Thanks for any help during this difficult time. I am trying my best to cope. Sometimes I feel hopeless.

A pap test only looks for abnormal cervical cells. It isn't std testing.

odds are you and your hubby have never been tested for herpes prior to this either. It's not a part of routine std testing.  It's also not a part of pregnancy testing in many clinics either.

just to confirm, you had a hsv1 igg of 5 and also a hsv2 igg of 5 or was it a combined test result of 5?

lysine isn't effective in reducing herpes ob's.

at this point confirm your testing results to make sure that indeed it was a type specific test . get hubby tested too and go from there.

Thank you so much! I went to the doctor's today and she said that it is possible that I was never tested. Now I am kind of thinking that I might have had this for a while eventhough I have not had any outbreaks because I do have pain often times during sex, almost like I might have a cut or something there. I am just upset because I always say test me for all STD's and I just assumed they were. But when I went last week (when I finally took the HSV test) I was just walking out of the door when I said so, did you test me for everything and they said yes everything except Herpes. I said, well, might as well take my blood and test me for that too. I am so glad they did.

I am surprised you feel like Lysine does not work. It seems like so many people are so adamant about using it and its benefits. Thanks for saving me the dissapointment.

They are sending me my results and when I get them I will post them.

Thanks again!

the research backs it not being effective in speeding the healing of herpes lesions as well as it only has a minimal effect on reducing ob's.  most of us get more than enough lysine naturally in our diets anyways.
