Lips Numb

I have been noticing for the past few months that my lips have been feeling numb. The numbness comes and goes and changes location, but it is usually around the spot where the upper and lower lips meet, but changes sides. I went to the dentist for a check up and I mentioned it to him. He said that it could possibly be a cold sore trying to come through but doesn't. Does this sound like what it is? When I was asking more question about cold sores he was telling different information than I heard on this site, so I don't know what to believe.

I should mention it is on either side of my lip towards the middle. Not the corner, those he diagnosed as angular chellitus.
