You ask how Lysine and the typical antiviral medicines like acyclovir work, and since I don't believe that Lysine supplements do work, I guess I don't know how to answer that. Acyclovir works by presenting itself to the virus as one of the "nutrients" that it needs to replicate, only it's just a phony, so after the virus has taken up the acyclovir to replicate, the chain the virus is making is stopped because it is just a phony and things cannot be built upon it. Does that make sense? The reason taking antivirals may impact the antibody test is because, for some people, the medication is so effective that little virus is made at all and because it isn't made, the immune system can't see it to make an antibody response. TiminBoston is correct to stay that most of us get a lot of lysine in our normal diets, so adding some is like throwing a deck chair off the Titanic in terms of viral suppression. The research just doesn't support that Lysine works to treat herpes. Having said all of that, research studies are always averages, and if for you it works, great. My guess is that your natural recurrence pattern might change some from year to year or something else might be going on. You can stop it and see what happens, no harm no foul. If you get "the outbreak you are waiting for" be sure to get it swab tested right away.

Acquiring HSV 1 genitally after many years of having HSV 1 orally is extremely unusual.
This is my final response on this very long thread.

What the hell is with this site??
It reads negative then says "less than .9" for HSV2
and it reads positive then says "greater than 5.0" for HSV1
Not sure why the formatting completely altered the content of my last two posts... but I hope that clears things up.
That message was totally distorted after I submitted...
Values have always been (since mid-Oct)
HSV2 IgG - Negative (5.0)
Hi Terri -
Can someone who has had HSV1 orally for over 25 years contract it genitally? I have had numerous HSV IgG tests that only indicated negative for HSV2 (5.0)
Could it be that my symptoms are related to having contracted HSV1? I'm actually hoping that's the case.
Thanks for the feedback.
If you have something on your penis you are concerned about, go and have it swab tested now. The longer you wait, the less accurate the testing will be.

Just checked: 4+ hours after I first noticed the red patch....
So I took a hot shower, which made the "patch" more red about 4 hours ago. Having said that, the water didn't bother the area at all (water DOES aggravate still-forming HSV1 outbreaks on my lips, when showering)
I just checked the area again and it is no longer bright red. Still, no pain or irritation. The coloring is almost completely back to normal.
I'm sorry to doubt your experience, Terri. This has been the most trying 3 months of my life and I'm a little embarrassed at the moment.
I should add that yesterday, I decided to go "all-in" and eat a ton of stuff that is said to encourage the virus. So, lots of almonds (lots) and peanut butter and crackers with dinner. No yogurt, low-fat milk or any of the other stuff that has lots of lysine.
I felt like I had to know if I had this thing one way or another... I'm just really scared. I was so optimistic waking up this morning. It really has seemed like all of my other "symptoms" had subsided completely.
Here's the update I never wanted to give: 5 days off of the Lysine and when I'm changing to get into the shower this morning, I notice a very distinct red patch on my glans. About the size of a pencil eraser in diameter. Very well defined. No itch, no pain. Terri, I haven't had sex in months. I haven't maturbated in weeks. There is not good reason for this rash/irritation... or whatever it is.
Please give me some guidance here. 1) How long do I need to wait to get it cultured? I do not see any lesions that have formed. It isn't raised and there isn't any fluid or anything yet. But it is there and it wasn't before. I noticed it about an hour ago.
2) How long does "red, painless patch" prodrom typically last before blisters form?
3) I think your clinic - or someone out there with the resources to do it - needs to take a long look at how lysine can alter IgG test results and lead people to believe they are negative even 3.5 months after contact.
I'm absolutely disheartened today. I was preparing myself to move past this issue.
I'm glad you feel you got your money's worth.
Do let me know how this turns out.
Terri
For $20, I don't know who else I could have ever talked to to get that good of an answer - especially so soon. I appreciate the information.
Feeling much better about my results so far. Will post again to this thread when I get my results after 16 week IgG, which will be in under 2 weeks.
Thanks.
oral HSV1 and sure message me
Thanks for the feedback. Very interesting. Do you mind if I message you to talk more about this? Is your HSV1 genital? I'd like to keep our discussion off of this board so that Terri doesn't have to scroll too much to get the latest.

I have some testing things going on as well so I know how you feel. My wife is a nutritionist and we both have HSV 1 so we thought about experimenting with lysine but the reality is you get so much naturally in your food that 1g would have little if any meaningful impact. If you eat any protein you're getting a lot of lysine naturally - a 5 oz steak has 3.5g lysine. (1) 8 oz glass of 2% milk has 650mg, 3 oz chicken has nearly 2g, 1 egg is 500 mg, 1oz of cheese is almost 1g. I personally get at least 5g of lysine from food so the incremental 1g would have no impact.
