My situation, please advise

by answerpleez, Oct 17, 2009 03:23PM
I had an HSV exposure seven weeks ago, not sure if she had HSV-1 or HSV-2, and didn't know the woman other than her first name.  I was extremely intoxicated and can't tell you how long sex lasted, but vaginal intercourse did take place.  I remember afterward asking her if there's anything I needed to worry about and that's when she told me she had herpes (don't know if she told me 1 or 2).  Six days after the exposure I saw my PCP who ran all the usual STD tests which were negative and a combined HSV1/2 test was positive.  I wanted to know what I was positive for so eleven days after the exposure I had a HerpeSelect type specific IgG test performed, the results was positive for HSV-1 at 4.x and negatvie for HSV-2.  Seventeen days after the exposure I visited an STD clinic and visual examination was performed by an STD Dr. as well as a urethral culture.  The STD Dr. did not see anything concerning and the urethral culture came back negative.  Twenty-three days past exposure I went and saw my dermatologist for an examination to check out a couple of spots in my boxer short area which he said were not herpes and he didn't see anything that concerned him.  My last test I took was at twenty-eight days past exposure and it was the HerpeSelect HSV-2 IgG ELISA, which came back negative as well.  I haven't had any "traditional" herpes lesions but continue to freak out about this exposure (I have battled OCD in the past).  I did masturbate twenty-two days past exposure and two days ago I noticed a slightly raised spot on my right index finger and that finger seems to be getting a little stiff today and I'm worried I may have transferred HSV to my right hand.  I am now taking anxiety meds but still worry about this HSV exposure.  With my HSV-1 I have no idea where that is, I haven't had any cold sores or outbreaks that standout.
Please comment/advise.

Trying to get a bump for an answer, I'm over ten weeks since this exposure.  I'm waiting until the 12 week mark to follow up with another IgG test.  Should I be tested for both HSV-1 and HSV-2?  Will a higher HSV-1 IgG value mean I could have been exposed to HSV-1 in this encounter as well?

Forgot to add, I had a HerpeSelect HSV-2 IgG test soon after my original post at 51 days past the exposure and it was negative.

You already know you have hsv1 so no need to keep testing for it. A change in that igg result would be meaningless.

You've done a heck of a lot of testing and none of it has any answers for you from this encounter.   At this point I'd wait until 4 months post encounter, follow up on all std testing then and repeat your herpes igg blood test then. Unless you have a lesion in the genital area that is very painful, don't continue to go back again and again to providers unless you really need the peace of mind.

The odds of contracting hsv2 from a one time encounter is very low in general if that helps with your anxiety at all about this.
