Need Help with Lab Results for Herpes

by dcrlvnv, Apr 30, 2009 09:45AM
My girlfriend was recently tested for STD's and HIV.  The type of test done for herpes was the Herpeselect A.  The result for HSV Type 1 was in the high-normal range.  However, the result for HSV Type 2 was in the high range, with a quantitative result of >5.00.  Does this mean she is positive for HSV Type 2?  I was last tested for it in 2007 and was negative for both.  I will be getting testing again shortly.  In the meantime, if she is positive for Type 2, does that mean I will be too?  Definitely getting a little worried here!  Hope someone can help...thanks.

Just because your partner has hsv2, doesn't mean you have to have it too.  It's really an overall low rate of transmission in general.

The herpes handbook and patient counseling video at www.westoverheights.com are terrific resources for both of you.  Once you've read the handbook you can both discuss what precautions, if any, to take from here on out.

Is it possible for someone to be negative for Type 1, and positive for Type 2?

Also, is there any minimum amount of time I should wait before getting myself tested?  We have been sexually active for a couple of months now, and I have had no symptoms of any kind.

As far as I know, she has also hasn't had any symptoms in the time we have been together, so is it possible I've dodged this bullet?  Nonetheless, I will be getting tested.

Thanks.

Wait a couple of months before you get yourself tested.  Meanwhile assume that you are still negative and discuss what precautions to take.

Yes you can be hsv2+ and hsv1 -.
