Negative tests, but positive culture

by lazypainter, Oct 25, 2009 06:34PM
I was recently diagnosed with herpes with a positive culture swatch but with negative test results (both IgG and IgM)? Snowball's chance in hell it could be a misdiagnosis?  I have been with the same partner for 4 years, none other before, and the outbreak just happened. I also knicked myself shaving earlier in the day and had sex later on, so my theory is that is a direct cause of the outbreak.

Has your partner been tested for herpes yet? If not, that's your next step.

was your culture typed for hsv1 or hsv2 or just + for herpes without a typing?

partner is waiting for the results, and he has had other partners. as far as he knows he's never had symptoms and a regular std screening 2 years ago was negative for hsv 1 and 2, as was mine.

i'm not sure what the culture was typed for - i'm assuming hsv2 because i was diagnosed with genital. i'm probably just grasping at straws. for a first outbreak, it lasted just about 2 weeks with only 3/4 days of real pain, not just discomfort.

I've heard that sometimes it takes up to 3-4 months after herpes exposure to show up in a blood test so if your swab was positive... you more than likely have genital herpes.

Give the clinic a call and ask them if it was typed. assume nothing. if it wasn't typed - see if they can call the lab to see if they still have it to get it typed. They should be following cdc guidelines and having all herpes cultured typed.

once your partner gets their lab results back you should have better answers.
