Not sure if this is a cold sore or not ?

My boyfriend recently developed what we think to be a cold sore. I'm his first girlfriend and I'm pretty sure he may have contracted it from me. I thought that I have had cold sores all of my life, come to find out it's actually an occasional case of angular cheilitis. I don't doubt that I may have HSV-1 because I have been in previous relationships with a person who has developed a cold sore.
The funny thing is that I have never seen a cold sore like my boyfriends. It's not very big, round, and completely white without any red irritation. It puts me in mind of a pimple with a white head, without any red irritation. It's ON his bottom lip and I have yet to hear back from him whether or not it hurts.
Could this possibly be something else other than a cold sore?

the best thing for your bf to do is to go and be seen and have this checked out by his doctor.  it needs to be done sooner rather than later for a lesion culture to be done.

Have either of you ever had type specific herpes igg blood tests to know your own statuses?

No, neither of us has been tested, and neither of us are able to get health insurance and see a doctor. I have been screened for STDs numerous times, and had visual inspections by a GYN, but it wasn't until now that I realized that I have not been tested for HSV, for it is not a usual test when being screened for STDs.
