One positive HSV 2 then 3 yrs later...neg?

Hi, I'm new here but just recently found this site and I'm hoping I can get some questions answered that I've had for awhile. In 2008 I had a blood test and tested positive for HSV 1 & 2. After discovering I was pregnant my new Dr tested again to know if measures needed to be taken to prevent transmission to my baby. In 2008, my HSV 2 came back at 2.37. My first doctor said it looked like it had been a recent exposure -How can they tell? (Needless to say I left my bf, who I'd thought I was in a committed relationship with for almost 3 years.) When my new Dr re-tested me during my pregnancy he said my HSV 1 came back positive (expected) and HSV 2 came back negative (it was low, like 0.8 or 1.8 maybe? Sorry, I can't remember the exact value). I'm wondering if it was possible for the first HSV 2 test to be a false positive? Or, if it was accurate, why it came back negative a few years later? I'm getting another blood test for it again today. Which has made me wonder, if this test comes back negative as well is it possible I really don't have HSV 2??

if your original doctor diagnosed you based on a + igm result for herpes ( hence the telling you it was a new infection ) , they erred greatly.  Your hsv2 igg result you posted was a low positive and indeed needed confirmed with further testing.

at this point, wait for your new test results, post them here when you get them and I can better help you figure out what your next step is.

Wow, thank you. I never knew that a concrete diagnosis couldn't be based on just a low positive. Even though I wasn't aware that 2.37 was considered a low positive at the time, I still wouldn't have known better to go get more testing done. I will post again on Monday or Tuesday after I call and receive my newest test result. Thank you again Grace.

Hi Grace,
I just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten about your help, and I hope you haven't given up on me! I'm still waiting for my test results. The Dr's office won't give them to me over the phone so I have to wait until my next appointment which is in the beginning of April. I'll be sure to give them to you asap.
Thank you!
