Oral HSV-1, Genital HSV-1 and spreading infection

I have recently been tested positive for type 1 genital herpes.  I acquired it recently from my partner of 5 years when he gave me oral sex.  Although he has type 1, it is oral.  I know I cannot infect him with the virus obviously, but can I still cause him to have an outbreak down there?  Especially if I am having an outbreak?  I guess what I'm really asking is should we abstain from having sex when I'm having an outbreak or will it be harmless since he already has type 1 herpes?

Just avoiding sex anytime you have anything genitally going on should be precautions enough. He has significant protection from contracting hsv1 genitally but don't take risks you don't need to.
