I currently have oral HSV-1 and so does my girlfriend of 10 months. We have been very careful about when having outbreaks to ensure we do not have oral sex. I recently had an outbreak on my lip yesterday and have been applying abreeva and also received a prescription for Valtrex. It has been approx. 2 weeks since I have seen her in which case we had oral sex but she didn't have an outbreak (no symptoms) Today, I noticed a small rash at the base of my genitalia but have no relative pain there, itching, or burning. However, the rash or sore seems (and I'm sorry for being graphic) but sticky? There is no residue that comes off on my fingers but it is kind of sticky. It is roughly 1 centimeter in length and about a 1/3 of a centimeter wide. I have several questions:
1. Is it possible to transmit HSV-1 to genitalia a few days after an the FULL completion and healing of an outbreak or even when my girlfriend doesn't have an outbreak?
2. I'm not sure if my current symptoms is HSV-1 or not (could be a rash or irritation), is it possible the Valtrex is "down playing" my true symptoms and is why I am not in a lot of pain or notice NO tingling, itching, or burning? I have never had a rash/sore like this on my genitalia in my life.
3. How long ago could I have contracted HSV-1 on my genitalia? Could it have been from years ago?
4. How should my girlfriend and I approach our intimate life if I did contract genital HSV-1?
