Oral Herpes?

Hello Everyone....this is my first post and I'm a bit nervous. I have a good friend that has HSV 1. She came to visit me and my family about 2-3 weeks ago and I noticed she and her boyfriend both had cold sores. They were visiting to provide support for me because I had surgery to have a brain tumor removed.....so I was a bit out of it because I was on so much medication. I was told after the fact that my friend used some of my chapstick, which I then used, as well as my 2 year old daughter and husband. I was also told that my friend gave my daughter kisses. Now, I have an extremely sore and red throat. The corners of my mouth tingle, burn and are very painful, but they feel more like cracks as opposed to blisters. As far as I can see, there aren't any lesions on my lips.....just red, cracked, and crusty lip corners. I went to my doctor this morning and he said it doesn't look like herpes. He took blood to test just in case, but I won't get those results back for a few days. It helped to hear my doctor say that, but I am still worried.....especially for my daughter. I haven't seen any symptoms on/in her mouth, but she does have a rash on her stomach....I am assuming (and hoping) this is not a symptom. My husband has a sore throat but nothing on his lips. I would be absolutely mortified if I contracted HSV 1 and then spread it to my family. I can't get this out of my head and I haven't slept for two nights. Any advice or comments anyone might have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Are you sure they tested you for herpes?  Most of the time, its not included.  I'd check.

Your daughter will be fine if she has hsv1.  My nephews (twins) both got hsv1 when they were about a year and a half old.  One of them had big sores on his mouth, the other got one tiny little sore.  They both took acyclovir, and were fine.

The one who had the big sores has had one tiny outbreak since, and they are now almost 4.  The other hasn't had any at all.

Their little sister, who is 2, has shown no signs of it, and trust me, they share everything.  If one has a toy and puts it in their mouth, another has to do the same thing, just to keep up.

Hang in there,
Aj

Hi Grace ~ Thanks for the comment. I was tested for all STDs when I was pregnant with my daughter and everything was negative. If this test comes back positive for me, what do you think the chances are that my daughter and husband have it as well? My husband and I are adults....we are emotionally and mentally mature enough to deal with whatever comes our way. Its really my dughter that I am most concerned about. What do you think?

Sounds like y'all are sharing a viral infection of some sort - the kind that are going around this time of the year.  You aren't very likely to have contracted hsv1 from a chap stick - no worries there.

Chances are good that you've never been tested for herpes before this unless you can recall otherwise.  Most adults do have hsv1 orally whether they can recall obvious cold sores or not. Do not be surprised if your blood test is + for hsv1 as totally unrelated to this incident.
