Outbreaks

I just found out I have genital herpes. I cried all day and still is in disbelief. I was wondering how many outbreaks do u usually get. and I asked my doc could I just take pills all the time so I won't have many outbreaks he said he wants to wait to see if I even get another outbreak. I just wish this nightmare would end. also does it always burn to urinate it burns so bad that when I do urinate I don't do it often or I put a coldpack there. Also I have yet to tell my mother I don't want anyone to know right now. I'm so depressed right now.

If you haven't read the herpes handbook yet at www.westoverheights.com be sure to do so. it goes into detail about how to treat your herpes as well as lots of other info too.

If it hurts to urinate - try using a squirt bottle and while you urinate , squirt warm water ( or cool water whichever feels better ) over your genital area to dilute the urine.

Also even though this sounds like the most backward advice ever - drink TONS of fluids, especially water. It will keep your urine dilute so that it burns less as it runs over the lesions.

cold packs are wonderful too :)

Lots of topical anesthetics out there for topical pain relief too.  We usually recommend dermoplast spray ( the blue can for the genital area, not the red can ) since you can spray it on without having to touch your lesions.  

Hang in there - it's a lot to deal with at one time.  How did they diagnose you and do you know if you have hsv1 or hsv2?

I have had herpes over 20 years i felt like you at first but time cures all wounds.I have around 3 bouts a year.you will be fine

He didn't say if its HSV1 or 2. I wish I never had another outbreak again, with the second one is it this painful? The doctor gave me some pills to stop the burning and to get rid of it quicker he said in a few days it should be gone away. and LESBIN you had it for 20yrs do you always know when you are having an outbreak because some people says after the first its so mild that you might not notice you are having an outbreak? Right now I need God because I hate my life so much now.

If you weren't told if you have hsv1 or hsv2, then that's your next step. You'll need a type specific herpes igg blood test 3 or 4 months after the last time you had sex to confirm type. Did they do a lesion culture or just a looksee and say it's herpes? The handbook goes into much more details about why type is important.

Recurrences in general will not be as bad as this first one is.  

Have you talked to your pastor if you feel you need that support?

So I will have to wait until like 3 months before I can find out what type it is? and I believe it was a looksee but I figured it was because I have the symptoms and everytime he touched down there it would hurt. I got a papsmear as well and I go back next for the results for that. and I don't really go to church I don't trust no one to tell my business too. I haven't told no one and I pray to God that no one ever finds out. My life is a mess right now.

Your pastor would keep your confidences - they are very good at that.  I just assumed you were a church goer by your statement hence why I said to talk to them.

Call the clinic you were seen at and ask if they did any herpes testing and if they did what it was that they did. If they didn't do any testing then your option is get a blood test now but if it's negative for hsv2 you'll still have to repeat it at the 3 month mark so it's up to you if you think it's worth the time, effort and money to get one now instead of waiting. should you get a return of symptoms before 3 months is up, go be seen within 24-48 hours of their appearance for a lesion culture and typing instead.

Don't be surprised if your pap test isn't normal. They really shouldn't have done one on you while this was going on :(

yea they did a pap smear and when he did it I was in so much pain. He didn't do any herpes test or anything but I'm pretty sure thats what it is even though I used protection and everything. but thank you so much for the advice

Hey, i've never been on one ofthese before, but your post stood out to me. I found out i had herpes on tuesday. I cried all day too, so you are not alone. I'm only eighteen, and felt like my life was completely over. I started to feel itching and pain, but my boyfriend got checkedand he didn't have it, however, he does suffer from type 1, which are coldsores on the mouth. We;re both shocked but he's helping me through it.

I just want to say that, i feel you, and how upset you must be. I want you to know there isnothing wrong with you, it unfortunately is one of those things sometimes but it will get better. And if you need anyone to chat to, i'm here (:

I'm just getting over my first ever breakout, and oh my god does this thing hurt like, bad. But as said above, apparently reacurrences are'nt as bad.

Well my doc never did a herpes test he assumed because I have open sores and I basically know I did 2 after I researched it on the internet. The question I have is I have open sores still and I had it for like 3 weeks. Do the open sores ever leave?

What medication , how much and for how long did they prescribe you secreet?

do you have a regular partner? If so they'll need tested for herpes too.  You'll need additional follow up testing to confirm herpes and type since your provider didn't test you when they should've.

Hmmm, he never did a test and you have had no change in 3 weeks? Until you are DEFINITELY diagnosed as being HSV+, there is a chance you are not. You said you have had safe sexual intercourse which is on your side for not having it. Find out if your boyfriend has HSV either 1 or 2. Trust me, the best STD Doctors in the world can be wrong at diagnosing herpes so a family Dr could be wrong here. I don't want to give you false hope but until you are tested properly, there is a chance this is something else. Don't be all depressed. Let me break it down to the bare minimums for you. Herpes is nothing more than a pain in the a$$ skin condition that happens once in a while. That's it. It's not going to kill you and your symptoms will definitely be less intense the next time IF there is a next time so just relax. The burning urine is an inital infection only problem with herpes. It won't come back on recurrent outbreaks. If you do have herpes, think about the first day you felt symptoms and count back when you had sex last. If it wasn't within about a week, this most likely isn't herpes. Herpes usually shows up within 2 to 7 days. Yes, it can happen after that but MOST of the time within this time frame. Keep us advised..... Some things you have said I am wondering if it is something else. There is hope....

The medicine I was on was like zoltrex and it was for 7 days to stop the burning and everything. He hasn't given me anymore medicine so I won't have many outbreaks because he said I only had one and wants to wait and see if I have them frequently. I still have open sores will they ever heal or go away?

I'd return to your provider for further evaluation since you aren't markedly better yet.

Call monday morning and ask for an appointment to be looked at again. they need to recheck you for yeast and bacterial vaginal infections as well as perhaps send off a bacterial culture of the lesions.

I got an appointment on wednesday. I still have the open sores but just 2 of them. and I believe I have a yeast infection so I will get that taken care of as well.

Well da doc gave me something for my yeast infection. My open sores have gone away and I still have an itch from time to time but I figure from the yeast infection. My doctor said don't wait around for my next outbreak he said who knows it could be my last for years to come don't waste it sitting around crying. So right now I try not to focus on that. He's not putting me on any meds he said until I keep or If i have any problems. and I ask do you always be sick when you have an outbreak he said no alot of pple don't have any symptoms at all it just depends on the person body.

Hopefully the yeast medication clears up that itching issue you've been having finally!

Recurrences usually are milder though still annoying.

yea I haven't start taking the yeast infection medicine and its gone and so is the itching. I just thanked God. I'm dealing with being diagnosed with herpes its hard but Ima make it because I have God with me.

you NEED to take the yeast medication dear. You didn't treat it before and look what happened - you got symptoms again. Treat for the yeast even though you are feeling better. The longer you let it go, the harder it is to get rid of and I don't think you want to be dealing with all of this again in a few weeks when it comes back again full force now do you?
