Positive test 3 years ago, now negative?

Positive test 3 years ago, now negative?

I want to know if anyone has had this same problem. Three years ago I had split from my boyfriend and we were both seeing other people. Some weeks after the break up I noticed severe swelling of my lymph nodes in my groin area, they hurt so bad i could hardly walk. The swelling took forever to subside, they were so enlarged that they never really went back to normal size. My other symptoms were generally flu like with a fever that would go away overnight and come back every afternoon with a vengeance. I was sick for weeks. When I went to my family doctor and told her about the lymph nodes, she examined me and told me the only thing she could think of was that it might be herpes, but that she "highly doubted" it. A week later my results came back, they were positive. I'm pregnant now and at around 18 weeks my OBGYN gave me a full extensive blood workup testing for all std's, including HSV 1 and 2. The results were negative. What could have caused this positive result? I spend so much of my time in denial of these newfound results because I was convinced for so long that I had this, I was even on anti viral drug therapy (valtrex) for some amount of time to lessen the chances of passing it on. I'm confused by all of this!

Hello,

Good questions.  Lets start with a few questions first:

1.  What test was run three years ago?  Was the test a IgG blood test or an IgM or some other blood test or was this lesison culture?

2.  What blood test was run now as a part of your testing?  Was it an IgM or IgG blood test?

If the test was an IgM test it is worthless for Herpes.  Doctors haven't really been updated on the IgG testing that is better preformed and the labs still run it for profit.  I would advise that you find out from the doctor 3 years ago what test was run.  If you had an IgG blood test 3 years ago then can you provide us with the numbers (would be something like HSV-1 igg 3.1 HSV-2 igg 2.9)  provinding the numbers would be helpful as grace maybe able to look an d give you some thoughts.

The IgG is the trusted test out there.  Given if that was the test run there is a few rare people that do serorevert (antibodies aren't dectectable).  However, if I recall this is rare among people.  I am curious as to the testing questions.

I can best help you if you call and get the results of your originally testing and your current herpes results. That way I can hopefully give you a decent explanation about what is the issue.

Thanks for the answer back and sorry it took so long to reply back to you, hopefully you get this still. The test ran three years ago was both IgM and IgG. The IgG was negative then, and the IgM was positive showing I had acquired the infection pretty recently or as they described, within the past 10 weeks prior to being tested.

The OBGYN i am with now, ran the IgG tests on me for both HSV1 and HSV2 both testing negative. So testing positive three years ago for acute infection, and now testing completely negative, is very unbelievable to me. Since I am aware that once you have this virus its FOREVER! I'm confused. I'm trying to obtain my results from my testing three years ago.

diagnosing you as having herpes based on a + igm only is actually grounds for malpractice to be honest. the herpes igm test is a flawed test and we never recommend it's use on adults to diagnose herpes.  your symptoms at that time also do not sound like they were due to herpes either.

it's very unlikely that you have genital herpes to be honest.

So i received a copy of my old test results, and the igg came back negative for herpes but igm came back positive at a level of 1.65 with negative results being anything less than 1.09 according to testing levels. I really should sue the crap out of them, they diagnosed me at 18 ruined my life and put me on valtrex suppressive therapy 500 mg a day. i just need to know now how i could go about it.
