I originally got tested by a general health clinic professional for genital herpes. The results came back positive. So I decided to contact my OBGYN for a followup test. He then also did a culture and the results came back negative. I feel as if I want to trust my OBGYN way more than a random doctor at a clinic in a college town. Should I have the type specific blood test done to get a definitive answer? Not knowing 100% one way or another is definitely an obstacle to live everyday.
what testing was done originally? if it was a culture that was + then you do indeed have genital herpes. odds are the 2nd culture came back negative because it was done later. viral lesion cultures have a very high false negative rate so getting a 2nd culture negative is pretty much meaningless.
if your original culture wasn't typed then you will need to follow up 3 months post encounter with a type specific herpes igg blood test. if you have a regular partner, they too will need tested to see who has what.
