so I went to my regular doctor that I never really cared for much and she took one look and a swab and left the room for about 5 minutes and came back an told me I had genital herpes, scolded me for not being more careful and gave me a perscription and sent me on my way. i never received a blood test. So now almost 3 years later i have never had another outbreak or any other symptoms. i havent taken valtrex since the initial time. I know that this can be normal for people with genital herpes but I was considering getting a second opinion from my new doctor. It has been very stressful for me ever since I got diagnosed. I have been in a relationship since with fear
of rejection, I have been reading about similiar cases online about people getting a second opinion and finding out they were misdiagnosed. i just find it odd that the only symptom i ever experienced was the blistering and it has never happened since. Any answers of suggestions would be great! Thank you for reading.
Visual diagnosis is wrong at least 1/3 of the time. I am not really sure on looking at HSV under a microsope. It would be adviseable for getting a HSV type specific igg blood test just to see what type you have.
Chances are if this is herpes then you have HSV-1 genitally. Your doctor should have sent the swab out for culture and typing. HSV-1 genitally doesn't have the high reoccurance rate that HSV-2 does. It is typical in HSV-1 genitial to go years or even a lifetime without having another outbreak. It does happen. At this point I would highly recommend getting yourself a blood test.
I will defer to grace on the microsocope being used to diagnois HSV. She may know of that being done. Typically it is my understanding that they culture and type it.
Ok thank you! my doctor never told me that she did any tests but i would hope that she did. But i think i am going to get a blood test from my current doctor just to make sure. My previous doctor did say that isnt uncommon for someone to go years without having an outbreak so thats what i figure i the case. Thanks for your comment.
odds are a tzanck smear was done. they aren't always accurate. it's unfortunate no lesion cultures were done and sent off to the lab evidently?
certainly follow up with a type specific herpes igg blood test. also if you can get a copy of your herpes test results from the previous provider, you can see if you actually did have a lesion culture done that was typed.
