Post Valtrex contagiousness

Ms. Warren,

I just had my primary outbreak (I think) of oral herpes. I used acyclovir, and I believe it was 4 days I was given a one day treatment of Valtrex. 4 pills 2 times in one day, in all 8 pills. I can't remember what size they were. My blisters have improved dramatically, and the swelling in my lip seems to have completely subsided. My question is this. After having taken the valtrex, am I know much less contagious? Let me be more clear. When I look at my lips closely, I see what I think could be remaining small blisters. I don't know if these are still contagious. Are these like remaining "ghost houses" where the viruses has left and gone back down the nerve? Or are they still blisters in the normal sense that haven't gone yet. I don't mean to ask a very gray area question, if that's what this is please tell me. I'm trying to find out if there is a fundamental element to valtrex that I don't know. For example. within so many days/hours after taking it, the virus will likely be pressed back onto the nerve and remaining sores will behave as normal cuts etc. If these are blisters, I just want to know if I'm still contagious. I'm sorry for my lack of clarity. Thanks!

I was recently prescribed Valtrex/acyclovir for a possible hsv 2 genital outbreak (1 gram every twelve hrs). The results were negative, but I was advised to continue taking the meds until they were gone. I previously was exposed to hsv1 which I rarely have symptoms aside from the occasional fever blister. Shortly after starting the meds i noticed that I had signs of an oral outbreak. I've asked and dr say that the medicine didnt cause it. But I'm concerned that taking a dosage for a different type of outbreak may be causing it. I was told when I called for result to finish the meds and then when I went in and asked they said to stop because i wasnt treating what it was prescribed for. Please help...I need to know whether to finish taking it as I was instructed or what???

How were you diagnosed with oral herpes?  Swab test? Visual inspection?  Antibody test?
You are less contagious when the blisters heal completely, but you could be infectious even without blisters.  Usually, herpes runs the course of swelling, blisters, ulcers, crusts, healing.  If there really are still blisters, you are still in the beginning stages, not the healing stages of this outbreak.  Are you sure they are blisters?

The virus doesn't get pressed back into the nerve.  The virus can still travel on the nerve but as healing happens, that happens less often and with less virus.

I'm sorry I can't be more clear, but your description is a little unclear to me, and I'm not sure that we will get more clear over the internet.
