I am about 5-6 weeks pregnant, and recently tested positive to HSV-2. I am concerned about transmitting this to the fetus. From what I have read, I believe the risk is greatest during delivery
Can you get the numeric results of your herpes blood test for me to look at - ie hsv1 igg 8.1 and hsv2 igg 3. 8 or whatever they are? That way I can be sure you were properly tested for herpes. No sense in worrying about herpes if you don't have to. If you had a + lesion culture for herpes that's fine too.
I'm going to assume you had hsv2 before you were pregnant so yes indeed the only risk is during delivery
and it's a less than 1% risk of transmitting hsv2 to your baby. It's really not something to worry too much about and unless you have an obvious lesion at the time of delivery
or within a week of your due date there's no reason for a c section just because of herpes either. It's also become standard practice for expectant mom's with genital herpes to take daily suppressive therapy in the pregnancy doses for the last month of pregnancy to help reduce the odds of having a lesion near delivery too. The herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com has a whole section on pregnancy that has the doses of antivirals for suppressive therapy during the last month listed in it for more reading.
