Question

Hello-

I hadn't had sex in almost two years when I started with someone recently.  Two weeks ago, we had unprotected sex.  As I was about to leave her house, I noticed a few free pills that turned out to be valacyclovir.  Although I should have, I didn't say anything at the time.  When I returned home, the paranoid bug took hold and I went to the doc and asked for acyclovir, which she gave me.  At the time, I had no symptoms.

Two days later, I started getting UTI-type symptoms (irritated urethra, increased urge to pee, etc.).  After two days of that, I went to the doctor again, who said it was possible that since she is likely a carrier, I may have contracted it and the pills meant I only got the urethritis, but no lesions.  She took urine (clean of UTI indications) and chlamydia and gonorrhea tests came back negative.  That night, I called her and she said that the pills were given to her for a lip cold sore.  She did have a boyfriend who cheated on her since she was last tested, but neither of us noticed outward lesions at the time.

The urethritis continued.  About 4 days ago, I started a round of Levofloxacine that I had on hand.  At about the same time, the symptoms were nonexistent.  I continued taking both the acyclovir and antibiotic.

Cut to this morning and the irritation in the urethra (opening especially) and some mild abdominal pain is back.

I realize this doesn't sound like and HSV infection and I don't mean to sound as loco as I do, but, if it were, would the acyclovir have taken care of the symptoms by now?  Would alcohol interfere (I did have quite a few beers last evening)?

If it isn't, what are the other possibilities?  Trichomoniasis?  I'm in the dark.

return to be seen again. repeat your urine testing and also make sure they manually examine your prostate too to look for signs of swelling.

So you have suggestions on what else it could be than HPV2?  I did 2 weeks acyclovir and it did not get rid of it (the urethritis).

yes, you really have to wait 3 months for herpes testing to be accurate.

I was tested for hsv2 in March 2012 and tested negative.

Thanks for the info.  I plan to get tested for HSV etc when I can.  I really have to wait 3 months for herpes test?  My medical provider asked me to come back a week after my prescription is done, which is tomorrow.

Since acyclovir and antibiotic seem not to have gotten rid of the urethritis, what would be the next most lilkely?

it was inappropriate for your provider to prescribe you acyclovir since you had no symptoms :(

you had unprotected sex so you should follow up with proper testing at the proper times. since you took an antibiotic, wait a full week after your last dose and get ngu and trich testing. 6 weeks post encounter you can test for syphilis. you have to wait 3months to test for herpes, hiv and hepatitis.  have you ever tested for herpes before?

is it likely you only had an urethritis from a newly acquired herpes infection and no obvious lesions even with 2 days of acyclovir? no it is not.
