I have type 2 genital acquired 36 years ago. Recurrences are very mild and average once a year. Starting new relationship with lady who has type1 oral who has frequent recurrences. Neither of us use suppressive therapy. She is terrified of getting type 2 on top of what she has already. In addition to 100% condom
use she wants me to go on suppressive therapy indefinitely. My concerns are about potential side effects of taking the medication for years on end. I'm wondering what my risk of getting type 1 from her is. Also, her doctor advises her against getting tested to type hers. I'm wondering what would be the benefit for not getting typed?!
At this point I recommend that you both get type specific herpes igg blood tests . You probably were not typed when you were diagnosed and even if you can't recall obvious cold sores, doesn't mean you don't already have hsv1 yourself orally. Also her having hsv1, can mask a hsv2 infection so she needs to find out her hsv2 status.
Having hsv2 does provide you with significant protection against contracting hsv1 but not the other way around. If you have hsv2 and she doesn't, you should both consider precautions to take to reduce her chances of contracting hsv2 from you.
There are no long term side effects to being on daily suppressive therapy. We have info on folks taking acyclovir suppressively for 20+ years at this point.
