On 8/14, I came down with shingles and blisters. My urgent care provider prescribed Acyclovir for 7 days and pain medication. I completed the medication for the 7 days. I saw my physician on 8/25 and he told me that it was healing nicely. On 8/27 it felt like it was coming back, so I saw my physician a second time. The evening before, I called the urgent care clinic that I went to on 8/14 and they prescribed Acyclovir a second time for 10 days. They didn't see me, but told me to see my physician, which I did on 8/26 and he said it is the same outbreak, and to discontinue the Acyclovir, which I did. This morning, I awoke to pain and now have a new set of blisters. Yesterday, my physician told me that he has never seen a second outbreak so close, and that it is the same. My question is why would I get blisters a second time in 2 weeks? Since it is a weekend, should I start the Acyclovir again, and can it do me any harm if I do? Being a weekend, I can't get in touch with the physician, and I now have 2 opposing medical opinions, from my physician to stop the Acyclovir, and one from the physician at the urgent care clinic on 8/26 to start the medication again. Thanks for your help.
No swab/culture was done. I called urgent care this morning describing what has transpired, and the doctor on duty believes that this new blistering is a bacterial infection and has prescribed a antibiotic for 7 days. It looks and feels just like the original outbreak did 14 days ago. He also said not to take the Acyclovir, and that if the outbreak continues to "grow" to call back tomorrow.
