Tender spot in pubic area, scared it may be herpes?

Last night I noticed a slight irritation in my pubic area (in the hair) and was immediately terrified at the thought of it being herpes.  This morning i shaved over the area to get a better look at it, and there is a bump, about a centimeter in diameter. It only hurts when i touch it, or my boxers rub up against it. I have never had sex, although I have had unprotected oral with my girlfriend, but it has been over 6 months since we started doing that, and we have not done it recently(in at least 3 weeks). I'm scared that this could be herpes.... please help me?

Never shave over existing symptoms, as it may only exacerbate things.

Be seen for a proper exam if you are concerned.

Have either of you been tested to know your herpes status? Have either of you ever had cold sores? No reason for being terrified -  become educated, not fearful. Oral herpes can be spread via oral sex, but usually if involves a classic outbreak of obvious painful lesions at the area of contact (i.e. penis/shaft for a man).

Neither of us have been tested, but neither of us have ever had a cold sore. I know I haven't ever had one. And of the year and a half I've known her, I've never seen her with a cold sore, and she says she has never had one, so that's obviously a good thing, that I should have included! Thanks for your help. Whatever it was, went away within a few hours of my post, so I'm not so nervous anymore. Thank you!

odds are this isn't herpes going on.  your description doesn't sound like it. also herpes will never go away in a few hours.
