Thank you very much for your help! I truly appreciate it!!
Can someone answer a question for me? My boyfriend tested positive for hsv2 a few months ago. As soon as he did I went and got tested. My results came back negative. I know i need to go back in a month or two and be retested because it can take several months before the antibodies show up in your blood. My question is since he tested positive and I tested negative is there any possible way I gave him hsv2?
Alternatively, contact the Westover Heights Clinic of Portland, OR (www.westoverheights.com), the clinic run by Terri Warren, moderator of MedHelp's defunct herpes expert forum. They can arrange for WB testing -- or, since they are highly expert in HSV infections, they might assess your situation and have general advice about how you should proceed.
HSV WB testing is done pretty much only at the University of Washington lab in Seattle, where the test was developed. Most commercial labs know how to refer specimens to UW for testing, but if necessary the lab or your doc's office can contact the UW lab to learn the procedure.
Thank you! Can you tell me how I'd go about getting the Western Blot testing done?
The HSV1 result undoubtedly is accurate. But half of all adults in the US have positive HSV1 tests, and like you, most have no recall of symptoms that suggest oral herpes. So this truly is no big deal. It probably goes back to a distant childhood infection.
There is no need to wait to retest for HSV2. Do it now.
Thank you for your initial response!! It was quite rude of me not to include that in my initial reply.
I have never had any HSV2 symptoms. How long do you think I should wait to retest? Do you think the HSV1 is probably a true result? I don't recall ever having those symptoms either but it would be much less shocking to me than the positive HSV2.
Based on the test alone, probably around 50% chance the HSV2 result is true. But that chance is lowered if you have never had genital herpes symptoms or known exposure to HSV2. If neither of these, I would put the chance at around 25% true positive and 75% false.
There are a few different approaches to repeat testing to sort it out. The best but most expensive is an HSV Western blot test. Let us know if you need more info about repeat testing.
Thank you! That helps a lot!
false positive would be expected as cross reactivity from hsv1 happens.
I'm not even sure I've been exposed. None of my past sexual partners have ever had positive results. I only got tested as part of a comprehensive panel of tests that I took to make sure I hadn't picked up anything. These results were pretty shocking especially since I've had no symptoms.
Hi, if you tested at 3 month post exposure the possibilites are extremely high.
