about 8 months ago. I have a few questions regarding transmission.
1) Given that I have never had a subsequent outbreak, does that mean that I am shedding the live virus just as frequently?
2) I have read that it is difficult to transmit genital HSV-1 to another partner's genitals because that is not the virus' site of preference. What is the likelihood that I could transmit this virus to an uninfected partner genitally? Orally?
3) Obviously the use of condoms
will reduce the risk of transmission, but is the use of a suppressant drug (i.e. Valtrex) as helpful in preventing the transmission of HSV-1 as it is in preventing HSV-2? I have read confounding research on this subject.
4) What are the statistics available on the transmission of genital HSV-1?
1 - the number of actual recurrences doesn't correlate with shedding. that said, hsv1 genitally sheds about 3% of days.
2 - very low. we don't have transmission stats because it gets transmitted from genitals to genitals so infrequently.
3 - we don't have info as to if hsv1 genital transmission is decreased from suppressive therapy. it doesn't shed much so it would be far too costly to study it like we have hsv2.
Thank you! When you answered question #2, did you mean that the transmission rates are very low both genitally *and* orally? Am I more likely to transmit it through genital contact? Can I still transmit it through oral contact?
I really appreciate your insight,
Thanks!
unless you get an obvious cold sore, no way to know if you also contracted it orally or not. most folks who contract hsv1 orally don't get obvious cold sores to know it. what few studies we have on this show that anywhere from 1/4 to 2/3's of folks who contract hsv1 genitally, also have it orally. if your partner is hsv1-, discuss together if you performing oral sex
