UTI symptoms: HSV-1 or adenovirus?

Recently i had some typical urinary tract infection symptoms but i'm really puzzled by what would have caused it. Here I'm listing details of my UTI symptoms. Specific questions are asked at the end.

7/2 unprotected oral sex, did not notice any obvious sore on her lips.

7/28 discovered 2 tiny lumps (< 2mm in size) around urethral opening of my penis, they are

- Skin colored, solid-fill, not blisters.
- no pain, no itchy feeling even if touched.
- no herpes prodrom symptoms or any other feelings.
- they could already be there before 7/28

8/5 started to feel mild UTI symptoms.

8/7 started to have stronger UTI symptoms, no discharge, no pain during urination, but had burning sensation.

8/9 visited planned parenthood, all STD tests were all negative except for HSV-1 which was positive.

-- Antibody reported by the HSV-1 test is high: 70.0
-- did not do trich testing.
-- two clinicians looked at the lumps, they told me those do not look like herpes to them at all.
-- they did not bother to take culture sample from the lumps.

8/11 UTI symptoms stopped so this round lasted 7 days

8/15 Lumps shrinked to <1mm

8/19 Felt mild UTI symptoms *again*. lumps are still visible probably were slightly larger than they were on 8/15.

8/23 UTI symptoms were gone again, lumps were smaller but still visible only when looked at carefully. Had an appointment with an urologist, waste of time.

Questions:

1. Do characteristics of my lumps and symptoms look more like herps outbreak or more like adenovirus infection? Not looking for any definitve answers here...

2. The fact that my UTI symptoms recurred within just one week, does this make it less likely or more likely to be HSV-1 related?

3. How do I tell if my hsv-1 infection was acquired genitally or orally without culture sample on active lesion?

4. HSV-1 IgG result was high: 70.0. Does a high count more likely indicate a recent or an earlier infection?

How about if you get a copy of the test(s) and post them exactly as they appear here?  Or you could fax me a copy at the clinic.  Something is just way off here.

Thanks again Terri. Both tests were done at the planned parenthood clinics here in seattle area, I think as next step i might as well find a different clinic to do the testing. I will post again to here as a follow-up after I get new results.

Great to know Westover Heights Clinic is still offering the swabbing tests, i will contact them to find out more. Thanks!

I have never seen or heard of herpeselect test that has any value great than 12.0.  There is some miscommunication here.

Yes, we at Westover Heights Clinic do offer phone and local patients the opportunity to do daily home swabbing.  But before doing that, I would strongly suggest that someone get the antibody test results cleared up.  That will be helpful.

Hi Terri, thanks for the answers!

I remeber seeing some post on this forum mentioned that the Westover Heights Clinic offer a test to find out if a person's hsv-1 infection is acquried genitally or orally by doing daily swabs of genital and oral areas for a month, and then analyze the samples, is this test still being offered?

The brand name of the test I did is HerpeSelect, results that are less than 0.9 are negative, 0.9 to 1.1 are undeterministic, and greater than 1.1 are positive.

I did the test twice 7 days apart to make sure the results are consistent, and both of them came back with 70.0 (and 70.2) as the number. It is a (very) high antibody count, does a high antibody count typically indicate a recent infection or an earlier infection?

1.  No, they don't but if you've never had a cold sore, your HSV 1 infection could be either oral or genital.
2.  Neither.  UTI symptoms in men can be many things, and even though your bacterial STD tests were negative, you could have other things that are less common and not tested for.  If you continue to have symptoms, you might want to consider taking an antibiotic to cover for other things,
3.  If you have never in your life had a cold sore, then you cannot know if your infection is oral or genital unless you get a lesion that tests positive by swab test.
4.  I don't know what test you had done, but 70.0 is not a score that comes up on traditional tests.  You might want to find out exactly what brand of test was used to get that number, and then perhaps we can sort that out better.  You probably could find this out by calling the lab.  You want the BRAND not the kind of test, i.e., not IgG or IgM but the brand.
