The vaccine has not been given to any females with hsv1 during the trials since we already know from previous trials that having hsv1 prior to vaccination with the herpevac vaccine renders it useless.

This vaccine is actually just the same ole vaccine that's been around for over 10 years now that failed miserably a long time ago. Further evaluation of the initial studies showed that it did offer some protection in otherwise hsv negative females hence the further study and ta da suddenly it's repackaged as the herpevac vaccine.

Grace,

Was the protection subject to the rules of "female without prior HSV1 infection"?

I assume you are talking about the herpevac trials.  They are just finishing up phase 3 trials - they are no longer recruiting new participants.  It should be about a year or so until we hear the results. The phase 2 trials showed a 40% rate of protection from infection with hsv2.

there are no other vaccines for herpes currently being trialed in humans that I"m aware of.  A few theracines for folks who already have herpes but no vaccines to prevent infection with herpes currently other than the herpevac trial.

There is a vaccine in trials. It has the following characteristics:

a. It only shows protective benefit to women, NOT men
b. It only shows protective benefit in women that do not have HSV1
c. The protective benefit is 50-75% range from my recollection. If you need more specifics, you have to do some additional research.
