In January I received negative results for HSV 2, but I don't know what type of test it was. About 3 weeks ago I went to an STD testing office and had an ELISA
test that showed positive for HSV 2, with a titer count (?) of 1.832. I dug through all the forums and posts and saw that there is a high likelihood of a false positive, especially since I am positive for HSV 1. I went to a different/new doctor (new health insurance plan just kicked in), and I told him about my research and asked for a Western Blot or Biokit test, for accuracy. They spoke to the lab and confirmed they could/would do this test. I got my results today and they're negative for HSV 2! I confirmed with the Dr. verbally that this was a Western Blot test (for some reason I just don't think he knows what he's talking about). They've emailed me my test results and it just says "Immunoblot", not Western Blot... Maybe it's all the reading and researching, but I'm a little confused at this point. The Dr. says that's the same thing... is it? What is the accuracy of this Immunoblot test? Should I trust the negative result?
From what I've read, i feel pretty good about it, but with all the confusion
test that came out positive (1.832).
i'm frustrated because i was very clear with my doctor about wanting the western blot test, and then today he said it's the same when i saw the results and asked why it says immunoblot... when i got home and looked it up, it was clear they're not the same (though i don't know the accuracy of the immunoblot). I left a message for the dr to discuss, but we've played phone tag this afternoon... i have to call again tomorrow.
not sure what i should do, or what the conflicting results mean.
please advise what to say to my doctor, to be clear about what test i need. not sure why he doesn't understand.
thanks grace.
i was unaware that there were false negatives too.
noted regarding the 4 months to ensure wb accuracy. is that the only test you recommend? do you have any advice for communicating with the doctor to make sure i get the right test? i don't know how much more clear i can be about the wb vs immunoblot, but he doesn't seem to get it. i'll speak to him about it tomorrow, but when i first discussed it, the dr office called the lab to make sure they could provide the test and they had the right test # and everything!
frustrating.
