Was it ever herpes?

When I was 18 years old and really stupid; i dated a scum bag and he cheated on me. The reason why i know he cheated on me is because i broke out in a rash on the left side of my vagina.
When looking at the rash it looked like jock itch or something of that nature, I didn't hurt, only itched and felt a little irritated. I didn't have any other kind of symptoms besides that.
I went to our local health department to get checked out and the doctor there said that it looked like herpes. I absolutely lost it, I felt as if it was the end of the world, completely devastated.
Anyways, the doctor swabbed it, but had mentioned that it wasn't in a state that would be good for testing and that i would need to come back when i had my next outbreak. When the doctor swabbed it, i didn't even flinch and they said they were surprised at that.
When I talked to them later, they said again that it looked like herpes but never specified what kind of test they did and whether i had hsv 1 or 2 or anything like that.
The rash lasted about 3 wks and then went away. It never blistered, i never had trouble urinating or anything like that.
At any rate- 11 years later, i got severe itching in my labia and a few weeks later i broke out in a rash on the same side where the 1st one was 11 years prior. I ran to my doctor in complete tears, explained everything to him, and he said that he only diagnosis herpes by looking at it because blood tests are not that accurate.
He inspected my rash and it turns out that it's folliculitis. He prescribed a cream and now it is gone.
My question is this: Could that rash 11 years ago been folliculitis?
I also want to ad that I have minor pain in my lower buttocks and down my hamstring a bit from time to time. Nothing ever comes out of it though, i never get blisters or anything like that. I have been reading about sciatica and it sounds a lot like that.
Any help/advice? Thanks in advance...

Herpes testing isn't a part of routine std testing or routine pregnancy testing.

At this point both you and your partner need type specific herpes igg blood testing to see who has what.  without a lesion culture of active genital symptoms, no way to know if you have hsv1 genitally if you only test + for hsv1.    Both of you need tested because you need to know who has what in order to make educated decisions about precautions together as well as with you planning to become pregnant, you don't want any surprises down the road because only you got tested and hubby didn't.

As far as your nerve pain issues, they could be many things. Let's see what your blood test shows first.

I forgot to add as well that my scum bag ex-boyfriend did not have sores or anything like that either.

Also, could anyone explain to me what the nerve pain is like from herpes and if it's only present around an OB?

For the past couple years, i've been getting nerve pain in my left lower butt/groin area and sometimes in my back thigh.

TIA

Well, I had went to see the doctor within a week of noticing the inital rash...
I don't have the results of that swab test and as far as the blood test with my regular doctor, I think he was trying to save me money because I don't have insurance.

Is HSV-1 generally more mild if it's in the genitals? When my ex cheated on me he said that the girl had given him oral sex and that nothing else had happened because he fell asleep afterwards, now i don't believe him at all but if it were true, maybe she gave him hsv-1 and that is what happened to me.

I am married now and my husband has never had any symptoms of herpes or anything. He is well aware about what happened though.

We want to have kids in the near future and i'm worried about it. Do you happen to know what kind of HSV blood test is given to pregnant women? Is it the test you are suggesting?

Thanks for your input

I am curious what the results of that culture where.  If you broke out on the rash how long before you saw the doctor and noticing the rash?  Typically in women your inital outbreak is pretty painful.  Given that it wasn't painful could be it was nothing more then fungal or something like that.  Timeline would fit an inital infection as well.  How long ago was your last sexual encounter and the time that the rash showed up?

Your doctor is a little behind in times on HSV testing I think.  While HSV testing is not perfect it is not like flipping a coin either.  No test is perfect.  Getting a type specific IgG blood test would prove I think in your case to be of far more help.Visually diagnoising herpes even by the experts in the field will yield a misdiagnoisis 1/3 of the time.

My advice would be to see your doctor or call the office maybe and request that you be tested for HSV using an Type Specific IgG blood test.  Do not use IgM (provides a lot of havoc for people since it cross reacts with other things).
If you get the symptoms again in the future you can be seen in 24-48 hours for another culture.  I think the bloodwork will be far more informative.

Even if the bloodwork is positive you could have had HSV-1 orally your entire life (typically we get this at a young age due to the kiss from auntie) and not known it.  Nor will it tell you the location of infection but generally HSV-1 is oral.
