What percentage don't show genital signs?

I am writing to see if what percentage of the time people do not show signs of genital herpes but still have it. Since blood tests can't show WHERE one has herpes, it seems important to know the likelihood of having herpes somewhere but not showing symptoms. I visited Planned Parenthood and they told me that you will pretty much certainly have an outbreak genitally if you have the infection there.

Thanks!

20% of folks who have hsv2 genitally don't have obvious symptoms. 80% have symptoms though most of them don't recognize them as being due to herpes.    Study after study shows that the vast majority of folks infected with hsv2, have no idea they have it until they are tested.

30% of all newly acquired herpes infections are due to hsv1. In the under 25 age group, it's the cause of about 70% of all newly acquired genital herpes infections in the US.

Hsv2 can infect the oral area but overall the risk is slow. The vast majority of oral herpes infections are due to hsv1.

www.pubmed.gov has all sorts of abstracts to studies about herpes.  If you don't like to wade through scientific studies and numbers, Terri Warren's new book "the good news about the bad news" is a terrific resource that is under $15 on amazon.

I am not sure about the statistics, but it is definitely possible. Although HSV1 prefers the oral region and HSV2 prefers the genital - boxer shorts region, they can infect both.

Thank you so much or this response. It is very helpful.

Do you have any studies that you could reference me to? It would be good to read to have a more in depth understanding.

Lastly, is it true that it is very hard for hsv2 to infect that oral area and for hsv1 to infect the genital area? There is a lot of information saying contradictory things about that. Are there any helpful statistics pertaining to this as well?

Thank you again!
