When did it happen???

I've been confused about this whole situation.  I've been told by my family physician that it is possible to have had HSV-2 for many years but never showed any symptoms which is why I was never tested for it.  I've had three children and figured it would've been something tested for during the pregnancy, but was also told it's only tested for if visible symptoms occur.  BUT...when my gyn gave me my results (positive hsv2) during my last annual she said it had to have been contracted recently.  This was a new gyn and she wanted to test me for everything since it was my first visit with her.  Is it possible to know that information from the test results?  I just wonder if I have had it for a really long time or if I just got it???
