Why Now?

My GF and I have been together for 4 1/2 years and have a very good sex life. She had a recent outbreak (first time) of Genital Herpes and I have never in my 38 years had any symptoms, outbreaks, or any signs of the disease.  I did get tested but came back negative for HSV1 & 2.  We are in a monogamous relationship.
Question:  Could she have carried the virus in an asymptomatic way for years and just "out of the blue" had her first outbreak?  If so, what could have caused it to finally surface now?

I had an initial outbreak after 3 years of abstinence.  Stress, another infection that causes a glitch in the immune system, friction..any of these things could have triggered the first noticable outbreak.

Looking back, I had probably had this virus for years..so small, that the outbreak could pass for an ingrown hair, or a pimple.

My worse outbreak was the size of two match heads, recurring withing 6 months..Thats when I went for the blood test.  That is when I was diagnosed with hsv2 by IGG.

Yes, a person can carry the virus for a long time with little if any noticable symptoms.

actually usually it's the person has had symptoms of herpes, it's just that they didn't recognize them as such. Now she had a more obvious recurrence that led to her being seen and getting properly diagnosed.

what triggers a more obvious recurrence? we really don't know. it's as much bad luck as anything. In us gals, bv often triggers it too but not always.

Ok, I will come right to the point.  If I do not have HSV1 or 2 and she had a visible, painful, outbreak with all the usual symptoms I have read about, and we have been very active together for 4+ years, is this a first outbreak and could she have had HSV2 all of these years and never known it???  We would have noticed something over the years if she had it prior to this event.

Ok, here is the latest.  I am HSV2 and 1 negative.  Blood test results provided this result.  She is HSV2 positive from her culture of the vaginal sores.  I am still not sure how her first outbreak occured when she NEVER had one before this time and we have been together exclusively for the last 4+ years.  What triggers a FIRST Outbreak when someone never had one before?

if you are negative and this is herpes, either she had it prior to meeting you and just never realized it until she had this obvious recurrence or it could be hsv1 genitally and your blood test just isn't reflecting that. even the best blood tests we have still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections so sometimes a negative hsv1 igg isn't accurate. hopefully in a few weeks here you'll have better answers.

Thanks Grace....What makes you think its not a new infection?  She has never had an outbreak before.  Back to my original question... Is it possible for this to have been asymptomatic for all these years?  What would cause it to just outbreak now, especially since I am negative?

a visual diagnosis of genital herpes is wrong 1/3 of the time which is why confirmatory testing is needed.

since at this point it's looking like this isn't a new infection for her, taking valtrex isn't an issue for future blood testing.

if her lesion culture comes back negative, make sure she seeks out type specific herpes igg blood testing.

Sorry Grace....I'm new.....

If someone had what seems to be an initial outbreak of HSV2 and immediately goes on Valtrax (SP?) if they then take a blood test would it skew the test results when measuring antibodies? .

Grace from all I have read from your responses to many others Grace, I understand that doctors can be wrong but hers was very sure she has HSV2

at this point wait for her test results to come back. you are testing negative so at this point you need to get better answers about her own status.

OB did swab and now waiting for blood test results but ob's visual exam made her (OB) certain it is HSV.

As far as I know yes she could have had the virus for a while. How was she diagnosed? Did she get a swab test or blood test?
