Wrongly "typed" culture?

Wrongly "typed" culture?

February 2009: I presented to my physician with irritation inside my vagina, a swab was taken, resulting with a positive culture for type 2 alongside negative blood work for both types 1 and 2. My doctor informed me that this result indicated that I had recently been infected with type 2.

My monogamous partner and I were tested before we began a sexual relationship in July 2008. He tested positive for HSV1 and negative for HSV2; I was negative for both. In Feb 09, I received a positive HSV2 culture and negative bloodwork for both HSV1 and HSV2. When I received my results in February 2009, he was tested again with the same results: positive for HSV1 (3.21) and negative for HSV2 (.10)

My questions are these: My partner and I have not had outside sexual relations. If my partner and I had been negative for HSV2 for over 6 months, without new partners- how could I have been newly infected with HSV2 in February? Is it possible that I actually have HSV1 (which my partner is infected with) in the genital region, and that my culture was mis-typed?

I have read a lot about the typing accuracy rates of Igg and Igm, but not about the accuracy of "typing" viral cultures.

I return tomorrow for my follow-up bloodwork, having allowed ample time to pass since February. I am once again nervous, and I am trying to get to the bottow of everything.

Any thoughts/experiences/etc. would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone received a mis-typed culture?
