As i said in my earlier question, I have had 2 type-specific HSV blood tests that both came back negative. In the first lab, they told me the test was very accurate (omitting the possibility of medical error of course). In the second lab they said that the test was more or less useless as sometimes genital herpes doesn't produce antibodies, so false negatives are frequent.
When I asked my gyno about this, she said "For me, two negatives means you're negative".
I have also read conflicting opinions on this on a lot of web forums. Does anyone know anything about this, or have experience of a false negative?
Thanks.
Blood tests aren't 100% accurate. There is always a chance that the sample obtained just doesn't have what the test is looking for in it. With herpes tests there's a negative range, a positive range and this inbetween range where it could go either way. And some studies suggest that even the lower parts of the positive range may not be totally accurate.
That said, if you've had 2 tests and both were negative, then it seems like that's good news for you! Are you having symptoms that have you questioning the results? Were you exposed to someone who knowingly has herpes? If not, then I would just accept the results and get periodic screening as all sexually active people should.
I'm now going through a negative and positive test results. Both tests where the IGG which I have been told is the right one to take. I have no signs physical symptoms except for some slight tingling and itching
that goes away the minute I think about something else...about 3 weeks ago with no symptoms or problems I went ahead and did my test like normal, I do testing about every 7 months or so, I came back a week and I was shocked to find out that I was positive for Herpes HSV 2, it was the IGG test, I told the doctor I had no symptoms, never felt anything, always use a condom
, he suggested to do another test , SO I DID test number two to test for herpes the doctor said he did another IGG, I did the test and now it came back NEGATIVE, im confused, the doctor called the lab and they suggested to do another test..so yes it is possible for a false positive and a false negative... I'm an example of that because one of these for me is true...don't forget that similar symptoms for herpes can be something else, but if you got two negatives in a row, you should be all right, i always tell people that Herpes is a common
with someone who had a coldsore, so you can see why I am worried. Every doctor I have seen has told me something different...
The tests were respectively three and four years after my first symptoms so no risk that I was just in seroconversion. I am so confused... argh...
The one symptom I have that I don't think could be due to anything else is the leg pain on one side. I never heard of anyone having this through yeast for example.
