canker sore=herpes?

i always thought that canker sores and cold sores were two different things, but the other day my human sexuality professor told me that there is debate about it. anyone else heard this before? also, just my luck, it appears as though i may be getting a canker sore inside my lip.  its a little raised white dot that is slightly tender..not sure what else it could be..i have had canker sores in the past but cant remember if they started out this tiny. does it sounds familiar to anyone else?  can you get a herpes cold sore INSIDE your mouth inside your lip? or is that just a canker sore and nothing more?

i forgot to mention i have genital HSV 1 diagnosed back in december havent had any symptoms since...and ive never had a cold sore on my lip before..just canker sores. but im not even sure if thats what this is! ha
