cold sore on chin

Hello,

I have herpes and I have had one cold sore so far on my lip, but it seems that I am getting a reoccuring cold sore right in the middle of my chin.  It looks very similar to a cold sore but I didn't know that cold sores could show up there??? Does this seem right???

An outbreak on the chin is Herpes I, which is the virus that typically affect the facial region: lips (cold sores/fever blisters), nose, chin and occasionally the eyes. It' can be spread if one has an open sore on the mouth and they mess with it or apply medication to it, basically directly touching the open sore and then say touching other areas of the face. Yes, it's in the nerve endings but it's more easily transmittable when say you have a open cold sore/fever blister and touch it-for whatever reason; not wash your hands and maybe squeeze black heads or white heads, touch the eyes, nasal passages, etc..this is what happened to me. I applied abreeva to an open sore and without paying attention decided it was safe to attack black heads on my chin. Within a week or two, I developed what I thought was a huge pimple on my chin. The difference it was swollen and I could tell definitely not a typical pimple, after a visit with my dermatologist we discovered it was from the cold sore I had a week and a half earlier. Since it was Herpes Simplex I, and I've used Abreeva and Releeve for cold sores I tried it on the chin...it worked and healing time was minimal. Now I make sure to wash my hands thoroughly anytime I get a cold sore. I've learned to pay attention to the warning signs and begun using Releeve before the sore even shows and many times it's gone within a day or two. Genital Herpes is Herpes Simplex II virus, while its slightly possible to contract II from oral sex, it is very rare since they're two different virus'. Be careful and stay safe.

I am depressed. I have a cold sore on my chin, and the dr. said it was probably just a blister from the wind bc I spent the last week snowboarding but I know the truth... it feels like an effin COLD SORE.  I didn't think you could get them there, but I'm pretty sure thats what it is. It is disgusting, and I am so ashamed.  *siiiggh*  keep it dry-- don't put ANY creams on it-- it needs to dry out and die.

Ive gotten cold sores since I was an infant (a gift from my dad and grandmother), usually on the corners of my mouth and for the first time in my life I got one on my chin at age 20. It was truly bizarre. It was at the extreme center of my chin, perfectly rounded and even. I had to see a doctor about it because it felt different somehow than my usual ordeal. My chin was sore. It throbbed. Normally the sores would be in small sprawls and tiny bumps but this was different. The symmetry was terrifying! I was afraid the strain had mutated somehow (SciFi I know but I had a crop circle on my face!). The doctor told me a combination of stress and possibly contact with a fabric or surface that had dormant cells on it. The medication that I usually take for cold sores (zovirax) came in a more concentrated dose in the form of a pill so I took that and it worked well. It hasn't happened again since then and I pray that it never will. I still think there is a medical explaination for the differences that only I could feel. But to the rest of the world it was just another GROOOOSSSS cold sore :(

about my last post, I had so many typos and in my forth to last sentence I somehow mixed it up and said "when you pick a zit or suck" and I just meant to say pick a zit. I think that came from earlier on in the post saying it sucks..just to clear any confusion because I am trying to be helpful and not confuse! lol sorry for the bad typing. time to practice typing again!

Yes it sucks. Most people who have trouble with cold sores get them on lip. Well I get tyhem on my chin too. For such a long time when I lived in CA I thought I was getting poison oak on my vchin in the same spot. Then when I moved to Hawaii were there is no poison oak I realized this was something else. At first docs said it was impetigo then finally a doctor diagnosed it as a cold sore! It is a drag. It really is a bother. try to keep it clean, dont use the same towell tewice on it, wash your face from top to bottom and in shower I try not to let water run down off chin towardprivies. This is a precaution I take for fear it could spread and become genital herpes... may be unlikely but...? I have had very good luck with taking lysine pills ( it is an amino acid) and they say to take it on an empty stomach. Alot of doctors dont believe in this but if I feel tierd, run down at all or like a tingling on chin I take a cxouple through out the day and I really think it fends them off. Alot of people who suffer from various strains of herpes take it to avoid out breaks so I think it can help. Also dont get sun exposure there and dont opick a zit. It resurfaces when you pick a zit or suck. Its a virus that reoccurs when the skin is disturbed. soi no picking and good luck. I wouldnt put random creams or **** on it. just keep it clean and dry.

If it's coming back frequently then why not follow up on it with your provider? It could be a cold sore and if it is then if it's coming back a lot - why not ask about ways to decrease how often it's coming back and/or treatments to start as soon as you feel it coming to help speed healing of it. It also could just be a plain ole pimple. It could even be some impetigo ( bacterial infection ).  Yes indeed cold sores can show up on the chin area but why not get it checked out if it's being bothersome?

If it's possible it's an outbreak, then yes, you should be keeping your distance from people. Even if it's not an outbreak, you should refrain from contact with others, like kissing, just from a hygiene standpoint. That sounds really unsightly, too. Hope it heals soon. Bummer.

ok, so it is considered an outbreak and i should not come within close contact with anyone else, right???

Yep.  Herpes infects nerve groups, and the nerve group that oral herpes infects covers that area, so it is possible.
