cold sores

I recently had the beginning of a cold sore. At the time I was not sure if it even was even the start of a cold sore because it was so small.  I immidiately began taking Lysine for two days and the small redness never developed into a full on sore.  During that time I did not understand that cold sores could cause genital herpes to someone else. I thought the two strains were completely different and could not be interchangeable.  I gave my partner oral and then we had unprotected sex.  I have had oral hsv-1 since i was 5 years old.  I am now 22. What are the chances I oculd have given myself genital herpes from this? My immune system was slightly compromised as I had chlymida and hpv, unknowingly, at the time.

no you didn't transmit it to your genitals that way. you have significant protection against contracting hsv1 on other body parts.

it's important for your partner to know their herpes status. you can't make educated decisions about precautions until you know who has what. Since over 90% of folks who have hsv2 have no idea they have it until tested, your partner getting tested is as much about protecting yourself as protecting them.

Thanks so much.  I'm not sure his status. He has not shown any signs or symptoms though.  Another question.. sorry if this is the same concept, I just really need some peace of mind :).. not to get graphic but he also took my hand, put it in my mouth, and then made me touch myself.. Is this the same concept or could I hve spread it to my genitals in that way?
Thank you for your help

you didn't give yourself genital herpes but your partner was at risk.

has your partner been tested to know their own herpes status?
