confused

I went to the doctor last week because of in infection
on my leg.  It was on the back on my thigh, five
inches from the back on my knee.  I thought in was a
staph infection and was very surprised when the doctor
told me it was herpes (HSV-2).  She told me it didn't
make sense but that's what the culture said.  How is
this possible?  She told me she's read about cases
like this but never seen anything like it.  I asked
two other doctors, one said given the location it
could have come from a shower bench or sauna, the
other said re-do the cultral; which they did with the
same results.  I've had no sexual contact with my leg
and I'm in good health. Pls help me make sense of this.

Herpes infects nerve groups, and genital herpes infects the sacral ganglia, which means you can get outbreaks anywhere from the waist down.  Your situation is not all that common, but it does happen.

Its important to know that you will still shed from the genital area, even if your symptoms are not there.
