culture negative, igg negative, igm possitive

hello,
I'm in a new relationship. before this relationship my last sexual encounter was months ago (condom used).  About 3 days after being with my the new gf, I developed a rash just above my anus.  It wasnt painful, however it was slightly itchy - but not enough to make me want to itch/touch it.

Went to the doctor the next day, the rash was still active so the doctor saw the worst of it.  - doctor looked at it and said it didnt look like herpes at all.  Still, I asked for the swab and blood tests.  Then doctor gave me this anti-fungal cream, and the rash cleared up in about a week.

culture came back negative, igg negative, but igm was possitive.  Doctor said I probably don't have herpes because the rash didnt look like herpes and the culture came back negative.  But the doctor wants me to come back in a couple weeks to get re-tested.  So, what do I do with this information.  Should I fear that I have herpes?

the new gf is going to get tested too.  She's never experienced or suspected symptoms from stds.

thanks for the input, it helps.
I guess I'm just being very aware of anything unusual since that first rash.  It's been about 3 months now and this is the first thing that seemed out of place so it immediately brought me back to the worrying.

Sorry to butt in, but I was in a very similar circumstance, you could just have a heat rash or jock itch.  I had a bit of a scare going on and I was paranoid about everything, but it was just coincidental to have a heat rash at the same time.  I get them sometimes when I tend to work out, wear tight restrictive clothing, or the weather gets hotter/humid.  Mine in particular was caused by the elastic band of my gym shorts folding in the front when I did squats, which gave me a burning rash that I falsely assumed to be something terrible.

I went commando for a few days to air it out and I was fine within a week.

Just thinking about the rash i got in Feb.  It just wasn't normal for me to get that.  I tested negative because it wouldn't have had time to be in my system.

Luckily she tested negative too, but is it possible to get false negative?  I'm still just slightly paranoid about the whole thing.

if you have tested negative and your partner has tested negative, why still worry about herpes?

update:  yesterday i noticed a couple spots on my upper inner thigh. initially looks like chaffing.  nothing fluid like, just like a burn or something.  i can only notice them visually.  they don't itch and aren't painful.  I was wearing briefs and traveling.  When i noticed it i switched to boxers.

today it looks scabbed over.  still no pain or itch. i can't feel it at all.  the skin is kind of flakey right now, and my guess is it will be gone tomorrow.

for some reason this just makes me worried.  any chance this could be a mild type of outbreak?

update:  new gf got her results back.  negative for hsv1 and hsv2.  As far as I know she hasnt had any recent partners, so there has been enough time for anything to show in her blood test.

the last sexual encounter i had before her was 3 months ago.  and my igG test taken 2 weeks ago was negative.  So I think it's safe to say I'm clear.

I don't plan to get tested further unless I get new symptoms.

encourage your provider to read the 2010 cdc herpes guidelines to update his herpes testing knowledge. It's actually considered malpractice to be ordering the igm testing on adults for the purpose of diagnosing herpes :(

make sure your gf only gets the igg testing done.

if this was a newly acquired herpes infection, odds are it would've presented with very classic symptoms even a first year medical student could recognize since you are testing negative for herpes.   Your provider saying this doesn't look like herpes is a good indicator that it really isn't.

the timing of this rash is what concerned me.  If the gf is clear I'll stop worrying about it unless new symptoms appear. She's getting tested this week, so hopefully next week when results come in I can put my mind at ease.
thanks for the response.

oh, ignore the IgM test - it was a flawed test and it's not reliable indicator. When it comes to herpes testing, only the IgG test is reliable.

If you're negative for IgG, you don't have it. Still, blood tests might take up to 3-4 months to become positive. If you feel it's needed you can pursue another test in the future. But if your new gf is negative, there's no need to worry - it can't be a new infection.

igG tests were negative for both 1 and 2, igM was possitive, culture swab negative.  I dont have the exact numbers but I can get them.

What IgG result was positive? Was it for HSV1, HSV2? Was there a number associated with the result?
Get a copy of your results and post them here - this way we can better help you to understand what's going on.
