exgirlfriend contracted herpes recently.......

I was with a woman for 8 years.  i am now 29, recently she contracted herpes and we are still good friends.  i have been tested recently and am negative of all STDs.  There are occasions when we are intimate and i i have always hoped to get back together with her.  She contracted herpes about 6 months ago.  she had an initial outbreak and none since.  She does not take Valtrex daily just if she feels an outbreak coming on.  She has told me that she has the oral strain on her genitalia.  We are very oral when we are together and i love her deeply and would jump to be with her again.  My question is what are my chances of contraction i were to be oral with her?  or genital to genital sexual?

first off check to see if you were even tested for herpes with your std testing. It's not a part of routine std testing at most clinics so you need to see if you were actually tested for not.

Unless your gf gets obvious cold sores orally, no way to know if her hsv1 is only genital or if it's oral too.  Discuss together the implications of this including should things progress back to a romantic level whether to have protected oral sex or not too.

Hsv1 genitally doesn't shed very often.  the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com has more info for more reading.
