. I thought that that was the end of the story, but about 4 months ago a small white lesion developed next to the scar (about 1-2 mm in diameter and quite difficult to see). It is mildly painful
, and sometimes itches a bit. I immediately went to see a doctor, who told me that it was probably just an irritation due to the scar, or a yeast infection and not to worry about it. The lesion didn't heal, (although it didn't form a blister, break or get worse either), so I went to see another doctor last week who told me that it looks like herpes. I had a blood test and HSV-1 was confirmed and the doctor prescribed antivirals. In the meantime I've done some reading and I have a few questions
1. Is it normal for lesions to stay around for so long (4 months)? Especially since I am otherwise healthy (also HIV
negative).
2. I would like to confirm whether the lesion is caused by herpes and whether the location of the HSV-1 infection is actually genital. (Although I'm guessing that it is) Can a swab test on the lesion confirm the diagnosis, even if the symptoms are really minimal and a blister hasn't formed?
I have also noticed a funny rash on my upper arm (where I sometimes get acne) and (although I've read that it is unlikely) I'm a bit worried that I have transferred the HSV-1 over there. Again: can this be confirmed by a swab test? And (3) if it does turn out to be HSV-1 on my arm, can I transfer it to someone else by giving them a hug etc.?
(4) Just as a point of interest - if HSV occurs on non-tyical body parts such as the arms, in which nerve
no, herpes lesions will not linger for 4 months. whatever is going on, it's not due to your hsv1 infection.
your hsv1 is almost certainly oral, not genital. there really was no reason for the doctor to prescribe antivirals for you from a + blood test for hsv1!
not likely you transmitted hsv1 to your arm either.
at this point I recommend going to a dermatologist to find out what really is going on genitally. It could be pronounced scar tissue you have just taken notice to, your molluscum returning or any number of things but it's not going to be herpes lingering unchanged for 4 months.
