herpes simplex 1

I just found out I have Herpes Simplex 1 in my mouth. My doctor barely explained anything to me as he dismissed it by saying that more than 80% of the population have it and that most contract it during their preschool years. I've read up on the subject and I understand the difference between HSV 1 and 2. I understand that HSV 1 resides in the ganglion area. However, I know that you can also have HSV 1 in the genital area. My question is if I have HSV 1 in my mouth right now eventually I might transmit it to my partner genitally if I decide to perform oral sex on him and if in turn we decide to have unprotected sex I might contract it orally as well. Im not very concerned about the HSV 2 because my partner and I get tested and we are in an exclusive committed relationship. I know that it is highly unlikely (but possible) to transmit HSV 1 from genital to genital but it is likely to transmit it through oral sex even when there is no outbreak. I'd like to know how bad is it to have HSV 1 in the genitals and basically if I have it in the mouth and my partner probably already has it too since (more than  80% of the population have it) wont we all get it eventually genitally? please do not address the differences between HSV 1 and 2 because that is the only thing most people address I want to know about HSV 1 the socially considered "good" herpes because its in the mouth but i dont think its so good once its in ur genitals no? thank you.

you have significant protection against contracting hsv1 genitally. If someone has an obvious cold sore, they shouldn't perform oral on you. other than that, no real precautions if your partner also has hsv1.

oooh okay thank you. i had a regular std test and my doctor i guess decided to include hsv. so basically i could give my hsv 1 to someone genitally if i perform oral sex on them and them to me as well?

Most clinics do not include hsv in their std testing. Your partner at this point needs to check on their last testing to be sure they were actually tested for herpes.  What testing did you have done?

Herpes is herpes it's just that hsv1 genitally reoccurs less often and doesn't shed as much so it's typically less of a bother than hsv2 genitally is.
